How we became a chitosan manufacturer and supplier

History

ChitoLytic is a specialized chitosan supplier born out of ChitOcean, a company founded in 2011.  Whereas, ChitOcean developed a clean-tech chitosan manufacturing technology using an enzymatic process. The technology was developed in collaboration with the Marine Institute’s Center of Aquaculture and Seafood Development at Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada.

With this technology, the crustacean shells are demineralized and deproteinized with a proprietary enzyme formulation which requires the use of less harsh chemicals compared to other methods. Crustacean shells are deproteinization and demineralization resulting in chitin.  The chitin is then deacetylated using enzymes to form chitosan.

The process results is a significant reduction in environmental impact when compared to other chitosan manufacturing processes, since so much less harsh chemicals are used; the effluent from the process is near chemical-free.

For our Ultra-Pure Ultra-Clean chitosan, an advanced non-thermal sterilization process is employed.  The chitosan is processed with a plasma-treatment process technology.  This depyrogenation process further “cleans” chitosan from most all bioburdens seen with some chitosan, e.g., heavy metals, endotoxins, etc.   This results in an endotoxin-free terminally sterilized chitosan with the underlying chitosan structure and its biochemical functionalities remaining intact. This results in a higher-quality higher-grade of chitosan, which can be used for advanced biomedical, medical devices, and pharmaceutical applications. For example, when chitosan is injected and/or implanted in the body, the FDA becomes concerned with chitosans’ “cleanliness” in terms of contaminants, such as heavy metals, endotoxins, etc.  This plasma-treatment technology produces chitosan which mitigates these concerns.

Applications

ChitoLytic’s chitosan products are targeted towards mid-grade and high-grade application areas. Mid-grade applications include cosmetics and toiletries; nutraceuticals and dietary supplements; food and beverages; animal feed additives; as well as agriculture. In fact, the company’s chitosan has already been studied and tested by the IR4, a regulatory FDA arm in agriculture for treatment of bacterial infections in tomatoes and cucumbers. The study resulted in positive results where the chitosan, used as a biopesticide, reduced pathogens and increased the growth and yield the subjects.

Beyond these mid-grade uses, the company is mostly focused on the development of low-volume, high-quality chitosan for high-grade applications, especially for biomedical applications in terms of Medical-Grade and pharmaceutical-grade chitosans.
